According
to the UK Wood Recyclers Association the UK generates around 9 million
tonnes of post-consumer waste wood each year. In 1996 less than 2%
was recycled; ten years later the proportion had risen to over 16%.
Wood-based panels, including particleboard, chipboard, hardboard and
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) provide a growing market for recycled
wood, whether a by-product of manufacturing or post-consumer waste.
Other markets are growing rapidly too. In 1996 over 95% of UK recycled
wood fibre was delivered to panel board mills. Today over 25% is accounted
for by new markets like landscaping products, specialist equine surfaces
and animal and poultry bedding.
• The longer the wood stays in use, the longer the carbon sink
effect of the product.
